Saints To Merge
It was announced this week that the West Dublin Saints will merge with the Midland Tigers.

After careful consideration by both teams Executive, an agreement was made to merge for the remainder of the 2011 ARFLI season. The merger has been sanctioned by the other ARFLI Clubs.

The West Dublin Saints will now be known as the North Leinster Kangaroos to take in the vastness of our catchment area (Fingal/North County Dublin/Meath and Westmeath areas).

One of the reasons for the merger was to give better experience to the players from both Clubs that are on the National team, by giving them more meaningful game time.

This merger will not only give us decent numbers but a strong bench, something which the Saints have struggled with this year due to injuries.

Team founder, Tony Watene said "I always look for the positives in everything and this is a hugely positive move for all concerned".

Hickey Makes Irish Team
Congratulations go to West Dublin Saint Aidan Hickey who has been selected to play for Ireland in this years International Cup in Australia!

We wish Aido and the Irish Warriors all the best in their preparations to improve on the 4th place of the 2008 squad!

Adios El Presidente

The Saints said farewell this past week to former President Edwin Nienhuis and wife Siobhan, who are moving to Spain.  Edwin, who was President from 2007-2008, will be remembered for his exploits on the field of play, especially by the team medics.  Siobhan will be fondly remembered for her vociferous support on the field and her driving skills, off it.

The Saints team and management wish them both the very best for the future.

Fernée selected for 'European Legion'

West Dublin Saint Ken Fernée has been selected as part of The European Legion Squad which will face the AFL/AIS Academy in London on April 23rd.

Ken joined the Saints last year, bringing an immediate impact to the team, capitalizing on his general fitness and skill drawn from a GAA background. He joins 23 other players chosen from Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden and Wales, who will play the elite 'juniors' from Australia.

We wish Ken, and the rest of the European team the best of luck!

Irish Warriors first International

This Saturday sees the first International match of the year for the Irish Warriors, playing against their old foe, the British Bulldogs.

This should be a great game of footy, with World Ranking points at stake which may be used to determine the divisions of this year's International Cup in Sydney and Melbourne.

So come along and support Dublin Saint Aidan Hickey and the Warriors, in what promises to be a great day out with BBQ and drinks available!

Further details can be found on the ARFLI site.

Clarke Takes Saints Player of the Decade

West Dublin Saints stalwart, Sam Clarke was the Saints nominee for 'ARFLI Player of the Decade' at the ARFLI Tenth Anniversary Gala held in the Aviva Stadium, last weekend – October 29th.

One of the original Saints founders, Sam has played in almost every game for the Club.

He won Saint’s Best and Fairest in 2009 and was nominated in every previous year.

Club President Rob Byrne said “there was no hesitation in putting Sam forward for the award. He’s one of the ‘Originals’ and what he has contributed to the Club, both on and off the field is immense.”

Other noteworthy candidates for the award were Paddy Gibbs and Aidan Hickey.

Saints Player Honoured
Congratulations to West Dublin Saints' Aidan Hickey, who has been selected as one of the National team's vice-captains for the European 9-aside tournament in Milan on October 2nd-3rd.  After being part of the winning team from the European 16-a-side tournament in Denmark/Sweden last month, Aidan was selected along with only 5 other members of the Denmark/Sweden tour.

National team coach - Tommy Madigan who is only taking 16 players to Milan, made wholesale changes to the team in a move to blood new players for next year's World Cup, in Australia.

Aidan said "it is an honour to be selected as vice-captain of Ireland, especially as it's only my first season of footy. I hope to do the country, my family and the Saints proud, again".

Best of luck to Aidan and the team, from the Saints.
